In a decisive step to reduce motorcycle accident fatalities, Karachi’s traffic police have mandated helmet usage on three key roads. Spearheaded by DIG Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah, this initiative will strictly prohibit helmet-less riders from accessing high-risk routes.
Starting after Ramadan, motorcyclists without helmets will be barred from entering Shahrah-e-Faisal, the Metropole to Clifton Bridge route, and the PIDC to Saudi Consulate road. This measure directly responds to the city’s rising motorcycle accident rate, emphasizing the urgent need for enhanced safety protocols.
“We are designating these three roads as model routes for helmet compliance,” stated DIG Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah, reaffirming the authorities’ commitment to prioritizing rider safety.
Ahead of full implementation, Karachi’s traffic police will conduct an extensive awareness campaign throughout Ramadan. This initiative aims to educate riders about helmets’ crucial role in preventing severe head injuries and fatalities.
The campaign will highlight the life-saving benefits of wearing helmets and encourage compliance before the stricter regulations take effect.
Following Ramadan, authorities will enforce a zero-tolerance policy, imposing hefty fines on violators. This stringent measure is intended to ensure adherence to the rule and enhance overall road safety in the city.
To further strengthen compliance, Karachi’s traffic police will introduce an innovative locking mechanism. Section officers will be equipped with modern locks designed to prevent the use of motorcycles unless the rider wears a helmet.
These locks will be installed in designated parking areas along the restricted routes, ensuring that riders cannot operate their motorcycles without adhering to safety regulations.
“Wherever a motorcycle is parked, a modern lock will be placed. The rider will only be able to unlock the vehicle after putting on a helmet,” explained DIG Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah. Each section officer will be provided with 50 locks to facilitate the new enforcement mechanism.
By combining awareness campaigns, strict regulations, and technological innovations, Karachi aims to establish a culture of road safety. This initiative underscores the city’s commitment to reducing motorcycle-related fatalities and fostering responsible riding behavior.
