KARACHI – In a significant step toward urban modernization, Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab has announced that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) is prepared to provide land for the establishment of charging stations for electric vehicles (EVs) and bikes across the city.
The announcement came during a high-level meeting between the Mayor and K-Electric CEO Syed Taha at the KMC Head Office on Saturday. The discussions centered on transitioning the metropolis toward sustainable energy solutions and enhancing the city’s power infrastructure.
Aligning Karachi with Green Energy Goals
Mayor Murtaza Wahab emphasized that shifting toward “green and clean” energy is no longer an option but a necessity to align Karachi with global environmental standards. By providing dedicated land for EV charging infrastructure, the KMC aims to encourage the adoption of electric mobility to reduce urban pollution and fuel dependency.
“Transitioning towards green and clean energy is the need of the hour to align the city with modern requirements,” Barrister Murtaza Wahab stated during the session.
Strategic Partnership with K-Electric
The meeting also touched upon broader energy issues, including solar power projects and affordable electricity transmission. Key highlights of the discussion included:
• Solar Park Development: Plans to establish solar parks to augment the city’s energy mix with renewable sources.
• Affordable Power: Collaborative efforts between KMC, the Karachi Water Corporation, and K-Electric to generate and supply cost-effective electricity.
• Institutional Coordination: Strengthening the link between municipal bodies and the power utility to ensure a more stable and reliable supply for citizens.
Supporting Regional Power Stability
Mayor Wahab acknowledged the vital role of K-Electric, noting that its responsibility extends beyond Karachi to parts of Balochistan. He reassured the delegation that KMC remains fully committed to supporting projects that improve the transmission system and provide relief to consumers.
The meeting was attended by K-Electric’s Haris Jameel and other senior officials. Both parties agreed to maintain a framework of mutual cooperation to address the evolving energy demands of Pakistan’s largest city.
