Karachi shares 84pc of total duty collection in Pakistan

Karachi, the port city of Pakistan, has contributed over 84 per cent of customs duty collected at national level during fiscal year 2021-2022, official documents revealed.

The collection of customs duty during the fiscal year 2021-2022 was at Rs1.01 trillion out of which about Rs851 billion had been collected at collectorates located in Karachi.

Meanwhile, other collectorates in the country jointly contributed 16 per cent out of the total duty collection.

The collectorates other than located in Karachi jointly collected Rs159 billion during the fiscal year under review.

The duty collection by Pakistan Customs posted a significant growth of 35 per cent to Rs1.01 trillion during fiscal year 2021-2022 when compared with Rs748 billion in the preceding fiscal year.

Whereas, the collection by collectorates located in Karachi posted 37.47 per cent growth to Rs851 billion during the fiscal year under review when compared with Rs619 billion in the preceding fiscal year.

There are seven customs collectorates located at two sea ports and one airport, which included: Karachi (West), Karachi (Preventive), Karachi (JIAP), Karachi (Exports), Karachi (Exports Port Qasim), Karachi (Port Qasim) and Karachi (East).

The collection of collectorates other than located in Karachi recorded an increase of 23 per cent to Rs159 billion during fiscal year 2021-2022 when compared with Rs129.27 billion in the preceding fiscal year.

The details of collectorates other than located in Karachi are: Lahore (Appraisement), Lahore (Preventive), Lahore (AIIAL), Gwadar, Gilgit Baltistan, Islamabad, Peshawar (Appraisement), Peshawar (Preventive), Hyderabad, Quetta (Appraisement), Quetta (Preventive), Multan, Faisalabad and Sambrial.

In terms of duty collection the top three customs collectorates belonged to Karachi, which are: Port Qasim, Karachi (East) and Karachi West.

Collectorate of Port Qsim topped with collection of Rs321 billion during the fiscal year 2021-2022 when compared with Rs321 billion in the preceding fiscal year, showing a growth of 44 per cent.

Collectorate of Karachi East ranked second in duty collection as it collected Rs251 billion during the fiscal year under review when compared with Rs211 billion, registering an increase of 19 per cent.

Similarly, Karachi (West) recorded third highest revenue collection with Rs168.66 billion during the fiscal year 2021-2022 when compared with Rs111.62 billion in the preceding fiscal year, depicting a growth of 45 per cent.
