The prime minister calls for a peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute under relevant UN Security Council resolutions and reaffirms Pakistan’s support for Kashmiri self-determination.
ISLAMABAD, October 27, 2026: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reaffirmed Pakistan’s longstanding position on Jammu and Kashmir, saying lasting peace and stability in South Asia cannot be achieved without a just and peaceful resolution of the dispute.
In his message on Jammu and Kashmir Black Day, observed on October 27, the prime minister reiterated Pakistan’s solidarity with the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).
He said Pakistan would continue providing moral, diplomatic and political support to the Kashmiri people and advocate for their rights at national and international forums.
Recalling events 79 years ago, Shehbaz said the landing of Indian forces in Srinagar marked the beginning of a tragic chapter in the region’s history. He maintained that the people of Jammu and Kashmir had yet to exercise their right to self-determination, as envisaged in relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions.
The prime minister paid tribute to generations of Kashmiris who had sacrificed for freedom, dignity and justice, praising their courage and determination despite prolonged hardship.
He also expressed concern over the reported incarceration of Kashmiri political leaders, activists and human rights defenders, calling for due process, respect for fundamental liberties and greater international attention to the situation.
According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office Media Wing, Shehbaz also criticised India’s unilateral measures introduced in Jammu and Kashmir since August 5, 2019, saying the restrictions had affected the territory’s political, legal and demographic character.
He stressed that developments in the region should be addressed in accordance with international law and applicable UN Security Council resolutions.
The prime minister said the aspirations of the Kashmiri people could not be extinguished through coercion or repression.
On the occasion, he honoured the sacrifices of Kashmiri men, women and children and prayed for a future marked by lasting peace, security and dignity, with the people able to realise their aspirations, including the right to self-determination.
