DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran says a second season will depend on whether the creative team develops a worthy follow-up, as the writers continue exploring ideas.

HBO’s Lanterns will not receive a second-season renewal until its writers develop a compelling follow-up to the first season, according to DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran.

Although the superhero series has not been officially renewed, Safran indicated that a second season remains possible, depending on the progress and direction of the writers’ room. He did not provide a timeline for a renewal announcement.

Showrunner Chris Mundy has reportedly been working on plans for a potential second season for several months. Reports have named Christopher Cantwell, Nakkiah Lui, Zack Whedon, Selwyn Seyfu Hinds and Vanessa Baden Kelly among the writers involved in the discussions.

Mundy previously told The Hollywood Reporter that he was about six weeks into mapping out a season. However, he also stressed that “there’s nothing official” regarding the show’s future.

Co-creator Damon Lindelof, who is not expected to return if the series continues, has said the writers are “ideating” on a possible second season. He also explained that the first season was designed as a self-contained mystery, giving the creative team an opportunity to explore a new story without necessarily extending the original plot.

‘Lanterns’ delivers strong viewership

The first season of Lanterns premiered on 16 August and concluded on 4 October. The series follows Green Lantern characters John Stewart and Hal Jordan, played by Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler, respectively.

Warner Bros. Discovery reported that the series attracted 9.3 million global viewers during its first three days, making it the biggest series debut for DC Studios on HBO Max, according to the company.

HBO also reported that the show’s most-watched episode, titled OutKast, drew 10 million viewers.

The reported audience figures underline the series’ strong initial reach, but a second season remains unconfirmed. Safran’s comments suggest that the creative team’s ability to develop a story that meets expectations following the first season will be a key factor in determining whether Lanterns returns.

For now, viewers will have to wait for an official decision from HBO and DC Studios.
