Lepas to launch new small hatchback with EV and PHEV options by 2027

Chery’s emerging Lepas brand aims to challenge Toyota Corolla and Mazda 3 with a stylish new hatchback featuring electric and plug-in hybrid powertrains.

Chery’s newest automotive brand, Lepas, is preparing to enter the competitive small hatchback segment with an all-new model expected to debut in 2027.

The upcoming vehicle will be offered with both fully electric (EV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain options, positioning it as a rival to popular models such as the Toyota Corolla, Mazda 3, and Kia K4.

Although Lepas has yet to officially launch in Australia, the brand is already outlining ambitious expansion plans.

The company is scheduled to arrive in Australian showrooms later this year with two battery-powered SUVs, including the mid-size L6 and the compact L4.

However, the brand’s future lineup will extend beyond SUVs as it targets traditional passenger car buyers.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with CarExpert, Chery Motor Australia Chief Operating Officer and Managing Director Lucas Harris confirmed that Lepas will enter the small hatchback market with a yet-to-be-unveiled model. The vehicle is expected to reach customers by the end of next year before expanding globally.

The small hatchback category was once among Australia’s strongest vehicle segments, particularly following the 2008 financial crisis.

However, consumer demand has shifted heavily toward SUVs, causing the segment’s market share to decline significantly in recent years. Despite this trend, several Chinese automakers have continued investing in compact electric cars, including the MG 4, BYD Dolphin, and GAC Aion UT.

According to Harris, the new Lepas hatchback will stand out through its distinctive design language and appealing styling.

He revealed that he recently viewed an early pre-production version of the car and described it as an attractive and sporty-looking model capable of addressing current market demands.

The executive emphasized that Lepas intends to bring a fresh perspective to conventional vehicle segments.

The brand plans to focus on vibrant colors, bold exterior styling, and premium interior design elements that differentiate its vehicles from more conservative competitors.

Harris noted that many modern SUVs have become visually similar, creating an opportunity for Lepas to attract buyers seeking something more expressive and unique.

By offering eye-catching designs and advanced electrified powertrains, the brand hopes to carve out its own space in the market and appeal to customers looking for a more distinctive automotive experience.

With EV and PHEV technology, modern styling, and a focus on individuality, the upcoming Lepas hatchback could emerge as a compelling new contender in the small-car segment when it arrives in 2027.
