Light Rain Forecasted for Gilgit-Baltistan on January 13

Islamabad, January 12, 2024 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a weather forecast predicting light rain in Gilgit-Baltistan on Saturday, January 13, 2024.

According to the PMD, mainly cold and dry conditions are expected in most plain areas of the country, with northern regions experiencing cloudy weather. However, isolated places in Gilgit-Baltistan and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are likely to witness light rain and snowfall.

The meteorological department has also warned of the persistence of dense fog/smog in plain areas of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and upper Sindh. Additionally, frost is anticipated in a few places in Kashmir and the Pothohar region during the morning hours on January 13.

A special alert has been issued by the PMD, stating that dense fog is likely to continue over the plain areas of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and upper Sindh over the next two days. Citizens are advised to exercise caution, and due to the expected dense fog, day temperatures are projected to remain below normal in most parts of Punjab.

The weather conditions on Friday, January 12, 2024, are forecasted to be mainly cold and dry in most plain areas of the country, with upper and central parts experiencing partly cloudy conditions. Dense fog/smog is expected to persist in plain areas of upper/central Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and upper Sindh. Isolated places in Gilgit-Baltistan and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa may witness light rain/light snowfall.

The PMD attributes the current synoptic situation to a shallow westerly wave present over the western parts of the country. This wave is expected to move northeastwards during the next 24 hours and may impact upper regions, influencing the weather pattern.

Looking back at the weather over the past 24 hours, cold and dry conditions prevailed over most parts of the country, with very cold temperatures recorded in northern parts and north Balochistan. Dense fog/smog affected plain areas of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and upper Sindh during this period.

Recorded lowest minimum temperatures in various locations today were as follows: Leh and Skardu recorded -10°C, Gupis -06°C, Gilgit and Kalam -05°C, Astore and Srinagar -04°C, and Rawalakot and Kalat -03°C.

As the citizens prepare for the upcoming weather changes, it is advised to stay informed about local conditions and take necessary precautions, especially in areas prone to fog and frost. The PMD will continue to monitor the evolving weather patterns and provide updates as needed.
