Veteran German goalkeeper leaves Barcelona’s training camp in England to finalize a season-long loan switch to Ajax.

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen is reportedly on the brink of completing a loan transfer to Dutch giants Ajax, marking a significant step in the veteran shot-stopper’s career.

The German international has already departed Barcelona’s pre-season training camp at St George’s Park in England to finalize the move.

According to Spanish media reports, Ajax and Barcelona have reached an agreement for the 34-year-old goalkeeper to spend the upcoming season in Amsterdam.

Barcelona are expected to continue covering a substantial portion of Ter Stegen’s salary during the loan period, making the deal financially viable for the Dutch club.

The move comes after a challenging spell for Ter Stegen, who has struggled with a series of injuries over the past two seasons.

Once regarded as one of Europe’s top goalkeepers, the German managed to feature in only eight matches during that period due to recurring fitness issues.

His injury troubles began with an Achilles tendon problem, followed by back surgery that further disrupted his playing time.

More recently, he suffered a severe hamstring injury that sidelined him for an extended period and curtailed his comeback efforts. The setbacks significantly reduced his opportunities at Barcelona and affected his international ambitions.

In January, Ter Stegen briefly joined Girona on loan in an attempt to regain match fitness and secure regular playing time.

He made two appearances for the club before another hamstring injury prematurely ended his campaign. The injury also dashed his hopes of earning a place in Germany’s squad for the FIFA World Cup this summer.

A move to Ajax is viewed as an opportunity for the experienced goalkeeper to revive his career and return to consistent first-team football. The transfer will also reunite him with coach Michel Sanchez, who worked with Ter Stegen during his loan spell at Girona last season.

Ajax are believed to value Ter Stegen’s experience and leadership qualities as they prepare for a demanding domestic and European campaign.
