Junaid Anwar Chaudhry urges stronger regional trade, transshipment and port performance to boost Pakistan’s economy
KARACHI: Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry has called for greater national unity, economic strength and expanded regional trade to build a strong, self-reliant and prosperous Pakistan.
Addressing an Independence Day ceremony at Karachi Port Trust (KPT), the minister said Pakistan’s economic sovereignty was closely linked to a strong economy and the expansion of trade.
“We must all play our role in the development of the country,” Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said, stressing the importance of valuing the freedom achieved through immense sacrifices.
Focus on regional trade and transshipment
The minister said Pakistan needed to strengthen its economy by promoting trade and expanding regional commercial activity.
He called for greater attention to regional trade and transshipment, saying these sectors could help unlock Pakistan’s economic potential and strengthen the country’s position as a regional trade hub.
According to the minister, an expanded maritime trade network could contribute to economic growth while improving Pakistan’s connectivity with regional and international markets.
Ports urged to set new benchmarks
Junaid Anwar Chaudhry praised the progress achieved by Karachi Port and Port Qasim, attributing their performance to the determination and hard work of their respective administrations.
“We must not just set records; we have to establish new benchmarks,” he said, emphasising the need for Pakistan’s ports to achieve higher standards in trade, efficiency and maritime activity.
He said the ultimate objective was to build a “strong, self-reliant and prosperous Pakistan”, with the maritime sector playing an important role in achieving that goal.
The minister also reaffirmed Pakistan’s resolve to protect its sovereignty and national interests, saying the country remained united and determined to move forward.
KPT chairman pays tribute to independence heroes
KPT Chairman Rear Admiral (Retd) Shahid Ahmed also addressed the Independence Day ceremony and paid tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for Pakistan’s freedom.
He said the nation should never forget the sacrifices made during the independence struggle and should continue to uphold the values and principles for which Pakistan was created.
The ceremony highlighted the growing importance of Pakistan’s maritime sector in supporting economic growth, regional connectivity and international trade.
Greater regional trade and transshipment were identified as key areas through which Pakistan can strengthen its economic position and make better use of its strategic geographic location.
