Ryan Coogler returns to direct the next chapter of the blockbuster franchise, with Black Panther 3 set for a December 2028 release.
Marvel Studios has officially announced Black Panther 3, confirming that British actor David Jonsson will join the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as T’Challa’s adult son in the highly anticipated sequel.
The announcement came during Marvel Studios’ Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, July 25, where director Ryan Coogler revealed key details about the next chapter in the blockbuster franchise.
Marvel also confirmed that Black Panther 3 is scheduled to hit cinemas on December 15, 2028.
Jonsson, 32, will portray the grown-up son of T’Challa, continuing the legacy of the Wakandan hero first brought to life by the late Chadwick Boseman.
Coogler, who directed both Black Panther (2018) and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022), will return to helm the third instalment.
Boseman, who earned worldwide acclaim for portraying King T’Challa, passed away in 2020 at the age of 43 while Coogler was developing the sequel.
Following the actor’s death, Coogler rewrote the script for Wakanda Forever, shifting the story’s focus to Shuri, played by Letitia Wright, who ultimately took on the mantle of the Black Panther.
Marvel confirmed that Wright will reprise her role in the upcoming film, continuing her journey as Wakanda’s protector while introducing the next generation of the royal family.
The casting of David Jonsson was met with widespread enthusiasm from Marvel fans on social media.
Many praised the decision, describing Jonsson as one of the industry’s most talented young actors.
“Amazing casting, one of the best young actors in the game at the moment,” one fan wrote online.
Another commented that Jonsson’s involvement had boosted confidence in the future direction of the Black Panther franchise, while others described the casting as an “excellent choice.”
Although Marvel Studios has not revealed plot details, the announcement suggests that Black Panther 3 will explore Wakanda’s future by focusing on T’Challa’s legacy and the next generation of heroes.
The film is expected to become one of Marvel’s biggest releases of 2028 as the studio continues expanding its cinematic universe with both returning favourites and new characters.
