Islamabad, May 23, 2025 – The capital city of Pakistan is bracing for a dramatic shift in weather, as the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has sounded an urgent alert warning of intense thundershowers and hailstorms set to lash Islamabad on Saturday, May 24. The warning comes amid heightened concern over the safety of residents and infrastructure.
According to the PMD, Islamabad and surrounding regions are likely to witness fierce thundershowers, accompanied by dust storms and the threat of isolated hailstorms and heavy downpours. The probability of this severe weather system hitting the city is pegged at 70%. The department has also indicated that a moderate to strong influx of moist currents is entering the upper regions of the country tonight, with an even stronger westerly wave expected to intensify weather conditions by tomorrow.
Friday night is not expected to be calm either. Partly cloudy skies in Islamabad will give way to scattered thundershowers and rain-dust storms, with a 40% chance of localized hailstorms. Citizens have been urged to remain vigilant, especially as high winds and lightning may cause damage to weak infrastructure including electric poles, solar panels, trees, and vehicles.
The PMD’s synoptic report reveals that the incoming westerly wave, combined with the moist currents, will affect upper and central Pakistan over the weekend. Saturday is forecasted to bring widespread thundershowers and rain across Islamabad, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, northeast Balochistan, and Kashmir. Isolated heavy falls and hailstorms could cause further disruption in affected areas.
Hot and dry conditions persisted in most parts of Pakistan over the past 24 hours, with blistering heat recorded in Sibbi (51°C), Dadu (50°C), and Jacobabad (49°C). But the temperature is expected to plunge in Islamabad as clouds roll in with menacing thunder and the unmistakable roar of hail.
The capital is advised to stay alert, secure outdoor belongings, and avoid unnecessary travel during storm hours. Authorities have activated emergency protocols and emphasized public cooperation to minimize potential damage as Islamabad prepares for this dramatic thundershower-charged showdown.
