Maxwell Shatters Records with Historic Men’s ODI Double Century

Glenn Maxwell achieved a historic milestone in men’s ODIs, becoming the first non-opener to score a remarkable double century. This extraordinary feat unfolded during a high-stakes match in Mumbai, where Australia found themselves in a dire situation at 91/7 while chasing a target of 292.

Maxwell’s incredible performance saw him forge a match-saving partnership with Pat Cummins, amassing an astounding 202 runs together, with the captain contributing just 12 runs. Their resilience and unwavering determination secured Australia’s spot in the semi-finals of the 2023 Cricket World Cup.

Notably, up until this game, all 11 men’s ODI double centuries had been scored by openers. Maxwell’s exceptional innings at the No.6 position defied convention and showcased his extraordinary talent.

In addition to his historic achievement, Maxwell also etched his name in the annals of Australian cricket history by becoming the first Australian male player to record a double century in ODIs, surpassing Shane Watson’s previous record of 185* against Bangladesh. Belinda Clark remains the sole Australian player to achieve this milestone in women’s cricket.

Maxwell’s remarkable unbeaten score of 201 not out in the second innings of an ODI stands as a new record, surpassing Fakhar Zaman’s 193 against South Africa in Johannesburg in 2021.

Furthermore, Maxwell’s innings marked only the third double century in a men’s Cricket World Cup match, joining the ranks of Martin Guptill and Chris Gayle, who achieved this feat in 2015 against West Indies and Zimbabwe, respectively.

Maxwell’s achievement came tantalizingly close to breaking Ishan Kishan’s record, as he reached his double century in just 128 balls, a mere two balls fewer than the Indian wicket-keeper batter’s record set against Bangladesh last year.
