Kylian Mbappe endured a challenging start to Euro 2024 as he sustained a broken nose during France’s opening match against Austria.
Despite the injury, which occurred when his face collided with Kevin Danso’s shoulder during an aerial challenge, Mbappe’s condition does not require immediate surgery, according to the French Football Federation (FFF).
Following the incident, Mbappe was promptly taken to a hospital in Dusseldorf where medical examinations confirmed the nasal fracture.
The FFF announced that Mbappe would undergo treatment and be fitted with a protective mask to aid in his recovery. His participation in France’s upcoming clash against the Netherlands on Friday remains uncertain pending further evaluation of his condition.
The injury occurred during a crucial moment in the match against Austria, forcing Mbappe to leave the field prematurely. Despite attempts by the French team to replace him with Olivier Giroud, play resumed before the substitution could be completed. Mbappe briefly returned to the pitch without authorization, resulting in a caution.
Manager Didier Deschamps expressed concern for Mbappe’s well-being in the post-match conference, acknowledging the significance of his injury. Deschamps emphasized Mbappe’s pivotal role in the team, having been instrumental in France’s 1-0 victory with an assist that led to an own goal by Max Wober.
Kevin Danso, involved in the collision with Mbappe, conveyed his regrets and wished the French star a speedy recovery. Danso expressed sympathy to French supporters for the unfortunate incident during their duel on the pitch.
Mbappe’s injury comes at a critical juncture as he prepares to transition from Paris Saint-Germain to Real Madrid later this summer. Despite his goal-scoring prowess in previous international tournaments, including 47 goals in 80 appearances for France, Mbappe has yet to open his account at Euro competitions to complement his impressive World Cup record of 12 goals.
Looking ahead, Deschamps acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding Mbappe’s availability for upcoming matches but affirmed that France would remain formidable with him in the lineup.
The manager stressed the team’s readiness to adapt should Mbappe be unable to play, highlighting the depth and versatility within the squad.
As Mbappe undergoes treatment and rehabilitation, the French camp will closely monitor his progress, hoping for a swift recovery that would allow him to resume his pivotal role in their quest for Euro 2024 glory.
