Before Meghan Markle became a global name as the Duchess of Sussex, she had a moment in the spotlight that resurfaced years later — creating unexpected headlines.
In a 2015 media interview, long before her relationship with Prince Harry began, Meghan found herself in an awkward position when asked to choose between Prince William and Harry. Her visibly hesitant reaction caught attention and later appeared in the couple’s Netflix documentary, Harry & Meghan.
In the clip, a cheerful and relaxed Meghan Markle is seen answering various casual questions until the interviewer suddenly asks which royal brother she prefers. Caught off guard, Meghan chuckled and responded with, “I don’t know.” When the interviewer pushed further, suggesting “Prince Harry?” she replied, “Sure, Harry,” with a slight grin. At the time, the moment was lighthearted, but it gained new meaning after her relationship with Harry began the following year.
By July 2016, Meghan met Prince Harry through a mutual friend, and just a month later, the two took a private trip to Botswana, where their romance blossomed. Reflecting on that early stage, royal biographer Andrew Morton shared that Markle wasn’t impressed by titles or status. Instead, she wanted to know if Harry was a kind-hearted person. According to Morton, “She saw the man, not the prince,” noting that Harry realized quickly he had to “up his game.”
In a 2017 BBC interview, Meghan revealed she knew little about the royal family before dating Harry. Coming from the United States, she explained, “You don’t grow up with the same familiarity with the royals. I didn’t know much, so all I asked was, ‘Is he nice?’”
Later, during her bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan Markle stated she never Googled Harry before meeting him. She even learned how to curtsy shortly before her first meeting with Queen Elizabeth II.
Their relationship, which began privately, became public by late 2016. Meghan and Harry welcomed the new year of 2017 together under the Northern Lights in Norway, sealing the beginning of a love story that continues to make headlines worldwide.
