Michael reclaimed the top spot at the North American box office after earning an estimated $26 million during its fourth weekend in theaters, continuing a strong theatrical run despite competition from several major releases.
The musical biopic outperformed films including The Devil Wears Prada 2, Mortal Kombat II and new releases such as Obsession, Is God Is and In the Grey.
The film has now generated approximately $283 million in domestic ticket sales and more than $650 million globally, according to industry estimates.
Michael biopic breaks musical film records
The success of “Michael” has made it the highest-grossing musical biopic in North American box office history, surpassing Bohemian Rhapsody, which earned $216 million domestically during its theatrical run.
Industry analysts believe the film could eventually challenge the Queen biopic’s global total of $911 million before leaving cinemas worldwide.
Other films compete for box office success
“The Devil Wears Prada 2” secured second place with $18 million during its third weekend and has now crossed $546 million worldwide.
Among new releases, “Obsession” posted the strongest opening weekend performance with $16 million from more than 2,600 theaters.
The thriller, directed by first-time filmmaker Curry Barker, has received positive reactions from critics and audiences, with strong ratings on CinemaScore and Rotten Tomatoes potentially supporting continued momentum.
Meanwhile, Guy Ritchie’s “In the Grey,” starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Henry Cavill and Eiza González, struggled at the box office with an opening weekend total of about $3 million.
“Mortal Kombat II” also experienced a sharp second-week decline, falling 65% after its debut weekend despite surpassing $100 million in worldwide earnings.
