The Oscar-winning actress says Aaron Sorkin’s distinctive dialogue and rapid-fire pacing pushed her beyond her usual acting instincts as she portrayed whistleblower Frances Haugen.
Mikey Madison has revealed that she had to work against many of her natural instincts while filming The Social Reckoning, the highly anticipated sequel to 2010’s The Social Network.
The 27-year-old actress portrays Frances Haugen, the whistleblower who exposed concerns about Facebook’s practices. Madison admitted that adapting to the film’s distinctive dialogue and pacing presented a challenge during production.
Speaking to Extra, the Academy Award-winning star discussed the demands of working with writer and director Aaron Sorkin, known for his fast-paced dialogue and distinctive writing style.
“Obviously, I know Aaron Sorkin’s very singular style and, like, the pacing that he tends to like,” Madison said. “I feel like at times I was really playing against a lot of my instincts just because I’m not someone who rattles off like that, but I guess Frances is.”
She explained that she usually takes time to process her thoughts before speaking, making the character’s rapid delivery particularly challenging.
“Even now, I take quite a bit of time to process things before saying them,” she added.
However, Madison found that the deliberate rhythm of Sorkin’s dialogue ultimately helped her understand Haugen’s character.
She noted that the whistleblower is someone who feels uncomfortable in her own skin, explaining that the intentional placement of every pause, full stop and comma, with little space between lines, helped her shape the performance.
Madison’s role follows the remarkable success of Anora, the 2024 romantic comedy-drama that earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress and transformed her career.
In a previous interview with WWD, the actress reflected on how the film’s success had changed her life, allowing her to travel internationally and introduce the project to audiences around the world.
“I feel like I’ve grown a lot in some ways, which is interesting,” she said, describing the experience as an unexpected but welcome surprise.
Despite the opportunities that accompanied her growing fame, Madison also emphasised the importance of returning home and finding comfort away from the pressures of the entertainment industry.
She explained that her home provides a sense of safety and familiarity, prompting her to spend time reorganising, cleaning and tidying her surroundings.
For Madison, balancing the demands of a high-profile career with the comfort of her private life remains important as she takes on new challenges in Hollywood.
With The Social Reckoning, she steps into a demanding role that requires her to adapt to Sorkin’s signature dialogue while drawing on her own understanding of a complex real-life figure.
