Miley Cyrus recalls experiencing an anxiety attack on stage in Mexico while grieving Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins.
Miley Cyrus has opened up about an emotional moment when she experienced an anxiety attack while performing before a large crowd in Mexico in 2022.
The singer recalled struggling on stage as she dealt with the recent death of her close friend and Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins, while also adjusting to performing before large audiences again after the Covid-19 pandemic.
Miley Cyrus speaks openly about anxiety
Rather than hiding her emotions, Cyrus said she chose to be honest with the audience about what she was experiencing.
“I was saying to the crowd, ‘I’m having an anxiety attack’,” she recalled.
According to Cyrus, the audience responded by opening up about their own experiences with anxiety, telling the singer that they were also dealing with similar feelings.
The difficult period came shortly after Cyrus experienced a frightening incident while travelling to Paraguay. The plane she was travelling on was struck by lightning and was forced to make an emergency landing.
Taylor Hawkins offered reassurance
Following the incident, Cyrus contacted Hawkins, who attempted to reassure her despite the frightening circumstances.
“He’s like, ‘Man, I’m here. It’s raining, but like the show’s going to be sick’,” Cyrus recalled.
However, tragedy struck the following day when Hawkins died unexpectedly.
The Foo Fighters drummer’s death had a profound impact on Cyrus. She later paid tribute to him during a performance in Brazil by singing “Angels Like You”.
Miley Cyrus reflects on difficult period
Looking back, Cyrus’s recollections highlight the emotional challenges she was facing while returning to live performances and coping with the loss of a close friend.
The singer has since entered a new chapter in her career with her latest album, Bass Persuades, while preparing for two performances at the Hollywood Bowl in October.
The upcoming shows mark another stage in Cyrus’s continuing musical journey as she balances new projects with memories of experiences that have shaped her career.
