Late penalty cancels Sadilek’s early strike as Group A points are shared

Czechia and South Africa played out a hard-fought 1-1 draw at Atlanta Stadium in their Group A encounter of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The European side made a flying start, but Teboho Mokoena’s late composure from the penalty spot ensured both teams walked away with a point apiece in a tightly contested fixture.

Czechia struck early in the 6th minute when Adam Hložek delivered a precise cross from the right flank. Alexandr Sojka cleverly redirected the ball with a first-time touch into the path of Michal Sadílek, who powered his finish past South Africa goalkeeper Ronwen Williams to give his side a 1-0 lead.

The early breakthrough allowed Czechia to dictate the tempo for large portions of the first half, with disciplined defending led by Ladislav Krejčí keeping South Africa’s attackers quiet.

Despite growing pressure, South Africa struggled to break through a well-organized Czech defensive structure. Their attacking rhythm improved after the introduction of Relebohile Mofokeng in the second half, whose energy and creativity injected new life into the team’s forward play. However, Czechia remained largely in control and appeared set to secure all three points.

The match turned dramatically in the final stages when Pavel Šulc was penalized for a handball inside the box. After a VAR review, South Africa were awarded a crucial penalty in the 83rd minute. Mokoena stepped up confidently and sent goalkeeper Matěj Kovář the wrong way, leveling the score at 1-1 with a calm finish.

In the closing minutes, both sides pushed for a winner but lacked the final touch. The draw leaves Czechia and South Africa on one point each in Group A, keeping qualification hopes alive but adding pressure ahead of their next fixtures.
