The experienced left-hander becomes Bangladesh’s second-highest Test run-scorer during the series opener against Australia.

Mominul Haque etched his name further into Bangladesh’s Test cricket history on Thursday by overtaking former opener Tamim Iqbal to become the country’s second-highest run-scorer in the longest format.

The milestone came during Bangladesh’s first innings in the opening Test against Australia at Marrara Oval. Haque entered the match needing only four runs to move beyond Tamim’s career tally of 5,134 Test runs.

Batting at No. 3 after the early dismissal of Shadman Islam, the experienced left-hander reached the landmark in the 14th over. He struck Cameron Green for a boundary to move past Tamim and claim second place on Bangladesh’s all-time Test run-scoring list.

Haque began the match with 5,131 runs from 145 innings and ended the opening day unbeaten on 35. His latest contribution lifted his overall Test tally to 5,166 runs from 146 innings, leaving him behind only Mushfiqur Rahim among Bangladesh batters.

Tamim, who retired from Test cricket after a distinguished career, accumulated 5,134 runs in 70 matches. His record included 10 centuries and 31 half-centuries, with a career batting average of 38.89.

Mominul’s achievement comes more than a decade after his Test debut for Bangladesh in 2013. Known for his consistency in the middle order, he has established himself as one of the country’s most dependable Test batters.

At the end of the first day, Mushfiqur Rahim remained Bangladesh’s leading Test run-scorer with 6,806 runs from 190 innings. Mominul followed with 5,166, ahead of Tamim on 5,134 and Shakib Al Hasan on 4,609. Litton Das occupied fifth place with 3,396 runs.

Haque also played an important role in Bangladesh’s response to Australia’s first-innings total of 198. At stumps, Bangladesh had reached 96 for one, reducing the deficit to 102 runs with nine wickets still available.

Mominul will resume his innings on the second day, with an opportunity to further strengthen his position among Bangladesh’s Test greats.
