Motie Named ICC Men’s Player of the Month for May 2024

West Indies’ Gudakesh Motie has made history by becoming the second player from his nation to win the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award.

The year 2024 has proven to be a remarkable one for West Indies cricket, with young star Shamar Joseph also clinching the prestigious title in January after a memorable performance against Australia.

Motie emerged victorious over strong contenders, including Pakistan’s Shaheen Afridi and Ireland’s Lorcan Tucker, to secure the May 2024 Player of the Month honor. The left-arm spinner has been a standout player during the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, showcasing exceptional talent throughout May.

His exceptional performance in the three-match home series against South Africa was a key factor in his recognition. Motie claimed eight wickets across the series, boasting an impressive average of 8.50. His efforts were instrumental in West Indies’ dominant 3-0 series victory in Jamaica.

In the opening match, Motie’s figures of 3/25 were pivotal in stalling South Africa’s chase. He continued his impressive form with 3/22 in the second match, effectively crippling the opposition’s middle order. His two wickets in the final game sealed the series sweep and earned him the Player of the Series accolade.

Motie’s stellar performances have carried over into the T20 World Cup, where he has already taken five wickets at an average of 11. His consistent excellence has been a cornerstone of the West Indies’ strong start in the tournament.

Expressing his delight, Motie said, “Winning this award means a lot to me. I’ve worked hard this season, and it’s encouraging to see the results. The first game against South Africa, where I took three for 25, stands out as a highlight for me.”

Motie is hopeful that his form will continue to contribute to West Indies’ success in the World Cup. “Playing in a World Cup at home is special, and with three wins out of three, we’re aiming to lift the cup on June 29,” he added.
