Nabi Set to Represent Afghanistan in Champions Trophy

The experienced all-rounder Mohammad Nabi is set to make history as Afghanistan prepares for its debut appearance in the ICC Champions Trophy.

Reflecting on his remarkable journey, Nabi remains optimistic about the team’s chances and his personal commitment to the sport.

Back in 2009, a 24-year-old Mohammad Nabi was part of Afghanistan’s first-ever ODI playing XI. Now, at 40, the veteran cricketer is ready to represent his country in their maiden Champions Trophy campaign. His career, spanning more than a decade, is marked by perseverance, dedication, and countless memorable performances.

Despite reaching the age of 40, Nabi has no immediate plans to retire. His passion for the game continues to burn bright as he remains determined to contribute to the team’s success.

“I’m still contemplating my future,” Nabi shared. “These might not be my last ODIs. I may reduce my appearances to allow younger players to gain experience. We’ve discussed this as a team, and my participation in future high-level games will depend on my fitness.”

Fresh from a victorious Bangladesh Premier League campaign with Fortune Barishal, Nabi enters the Champions Trophy with high confidence. His contributions in crucial matches have further bolstered his belief in his abilities.

“The preparations have gone well,” Nabi said. “I participated in three intensive training sessions with the national team in Abu Dhabi, and I’m feeling fit and ready. Winning the BPL from a tough situation gave me a lot of confidence. My bowling and batting performances were impactful, especially in the final stages.”

While Nabi’s presence brings experience and stability, Afghanistan’s squad also includes promising new talents eager to shine. Among them is 20-year-old spinner Nangialai Kharoti, who has earned high praise from Nabi.

“He’s a promising young talent who’s been performing consistently for the last two years,” Nabi remarked. “Not only is he a skilled spinner, but he’s also an excellent fielder. His recent performances against South Africa and Ireland have been impressive.”

The Afghan spin attack will be spearheaded by Rashid Khan, who recently overtook Dwayne Bravo as the leading wicket-taker in T20 cricket.

“Rashid is phenomenal,” Nabi said. “He’s aggressive, energetic, and hungry for wickets. Off the field, he’s humble and enjoys life. I’m confident he’ll reach 1,000 wickets soon.”

Afghanistan, placed in Group B, will launch their Champions Trophy journey against South Africa on February 21 in Karachi. With a blend of experience and youthful exuberance, the team hopes to make a significant impact on the global stage.
