Oscar-nominated actress Naomi Watts has officially confirmed her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut, revealing that she has joined the cast of Spider-Man: Brand New Day in a secret role alongside Tom Holland.
The 57-year-old actress shared the announcement through an Instagram post celebrating the film’s blockbuster opening weekend while expressing her excitement about becoming part of the Spider-Man franchise.
Naomi Watts reveals her Marvel role
In her Instagram post, Watts disclosed that she portrays an AI-powered digital assistant for Peter Parker, although further details about the character remain under wraps.
“From playing your mom to playing your AI (100% human made),” Watts wrote, referencing her previous collaboration with Holland.
She also congratulated Holland, director Destin Daniel Cretton, and the entire cast and crew on the film’s successful debut.
“Congrats Tom, Destin, and the whole Spider-Man: Brand New Day team on the historic opening weekend!! Immensely proud to even just a tiny part of this incredible film!” she added.
Behind-the-scenes glimpse
Alongside the announcement, Watts shared a behind-the-scenes selfie taken inside a recording booth, where she was seen wearing headphones while speaking with director Destin Daniel Cretton over Zoom.
Another photo appeared to show Watts alongside her son, Sasha, on the set of an earlier Spider-Man production, recalling her longstanding connection with Holland.
Reunion with Tom Holland
Spider-Man: Brand New Day marks another collaboration between Naomi Watts and Tom Holland, who first worked together in the 2012 disaster drama The Impossible.
The film also reunites Watts with director Destin Daniel Cretton and actress Sadie Sink, following their previous collaboration on The Glass Castle.
While promoting both Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey, Holland reflected on working with Watts during an appearance on Amy Poehler’s Good Hang podcast.
The actor credited Watts with teaching him valuable lessons early in his career.
“I was able to watch a professional at the top of her game deliver a masterful performance while also taking me under her wing and teaching me everything I know about cinema,” Holland said.
