Petroleum dealers suspend planned shutdown as government promises to address margin concerns and review daily fuel pricing mechanism.
The All Pakistan Petrol Pumps Owners Association (APPPOA) has postponed its planned nationwide strike following successful negotiations with the federal government.
The decision was also supported by the Petroleum Dealers Association, easing concerns over a potential disruption in fuel supplies across the country.
The petroleum sector representatives had earlier announced a 24-hour nationwide shutdown beginning Thursday to protest the government’s move toward implementing a daily petroleum pricing mechanism. The proposed strike had raised fears of fuel shortages and inconvenience for consumers nationwide.
Government Assures Resolution of Dealers’ Concerns
During a joint press conference with Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik, representatives of petrol pump owners and dealers confirmed that the government had assured them that their concerns would be addressed. Following these assurances, both associations agreed to suspend the strike call.
Petroleum dealers stated that the government had committed to reviewing and increasing dealers’ margins, a longstanding demand of the sector.
They expressed optimism that the issue would be resolved within the next two weeks through consultations and administrative measures.
Daily Fuel Pricing System to Be Reviewed
APPPOA Information Secretary Nadeem Khan said the decision to defer the strike was taken after receiving guarantees from the government regarding the settlement of key demands. He noted that the issue of dealer commissions is expected to be finalized within a fortnight.
Khan also explained that the proposed daily fuel pricing mechanism would be implemented on a trial basis during the same period. The results of the trial would then be evaluated in consultation with petroleum sector stakeholders.
Cabinet to Review Margin Adjustment Proposal
Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik reiterated the government’s commitment to resolving outstanding issues within two weeks.
He said a summary regarding the proposed increase in petroleum dealers’ margins would be presented before the federal cabinet for consideration.
The minister further stated that the daily pricing mechanism would be reviewed jointly with petroleum industry organizations after the trial phase to ensure its effectiveness and practicality.
Focus on Transparency and Consumer Relief
Malik emphasized that the government aims to maintain transparency in petroleum pricing while preventing any perception of excessive profiteering.
He added that fuel prices would continue to reflect international market trends and assured consumers that any financial benefit generated under the existing pricing formula would be passed on promptly and transparently.
The postponement of the strike has provided temporary relief to consumers and businesses, while negotiations between the government and petroleum stakeholders continue to shape the future of fuel pricing in Pakistan.
