NDMA Issues Severe Weather Alert for Sindh

Islamabad, August 10, 2024 – The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a stern warning for a strong weather system set to impact many districts in Sindh over the next 72 hours.

The National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC) has forecasted significant rain, wind, and thundershowers throughout the region, urging residents to prepare for potential disruptions.

According to the NDMA, districts including Badin, Chhor, Dadu, Hyderabad, Jacobabad, Jamshoro, Karachi, Khairpur, Larkana, Mithi, Mitayari, Mirpur Khas, Nausheroferoze, Padidan, Sajawal, Sanghar, Shaheed Benazirabad, Sukkur, Tando Allayar, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tharparkar, Thatta, and Umarkot are expected to experience varying degrees of rainfall and thundershowers until August 12.

The NDMA has advised the public to stay updated with weather alerts and advisories through their newly launched Pak NDMA Disaster Alert application, available on both Google Play Store and iOS App Store. The app aims to provide timely alerts, advisories, and safety guidelines to help residents navigate the severe weather conditions.

To minimize the impact of the impending weather, the NDMA recommends several precautionary measures. Residents should ensure that their roofs and windows are properly sealed to prevent water leakage. It is also crucial to clear gutters and drainage systems to avoid water accumulation, which could lead to localized flooding.

The NDMA urges people to secure any loose items outdoors that could be damaged or blown away by strong winds and heavy rain. It is advised not to walk, swim, or drive through flooded areas and to use alternative routes to avoid these dangerous conditions. Residents should also be cautious of open manholes and submerged obstacles. To prevent electrical hazards, unplug appliances during heavy rains and avoid touching electrical equipment with wet hands.

In response to the forecasted severe weather, the NDMA has instructed all relevant departments to implement precautionary measures to mitigate the effects of potential flooding and extreme weather conditions. The authorities are prepared to address any emergencies and provide necessary assistance to affected communities.

Residents are encouraged to follow these guidelines closely and remain vigilant as the weather system develops over the coming days.
