Next-generation Toyota Fortuner set for December 1 launch

Toyota is preparing a long-awaited overhaul of its popular three-row SUV, with bolder styling, a redesigned cabin and upgraded technology expected alongside familiar mechanical foundations.

Toyota is gearing up to unveil the next-generation Fortuner globally on December 1, marking a major milestone for the three-row SUV that has remained largely unchanged since its introduction in 2016. The upcoming model is expected to bring substantial improvements in design, cabin technology and safety features while retaining much of the existing platform and powertrain lineup.

The new Fortuner’s Indian launch is expected to take place sometime in 2027, although Toyota has yet to announce an exact date. Further details regarding market-specific specifications, variants and pricing are also awaited.

Sharper Exterior With a More Modern Look

The redesigned Fortuner is expected to adopt a more contemporary appearance, potentially drawing inspiration from the latest Toyota Hilux. However, the SUV is likely to receive distinctive styling elements to maintain its own identity within the brand’s lineup.

Expected changes include sharper bodywork, revised front and rear styling, and updated lighting elements. Despite these modifications, Toyota is likely to preserve the Fortuner’s muscular proportions and rugged character, which have helped establish its reputation in the SUV segment.

Cabin Technology and Safety Upgrades

The interior is also expected to receive a comprehensive redesign. The new Fortuner could feature a dashboard layout inspired by the latest Hilux, incorporating a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a fully digital instrument cluster.

Additional equipment may include a 360-degree camera, wireless smartphone charging and ventilated front seats on higher-specification variants. The introduction of Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) is also anticipated, potentially bringing features designed to improve driver awareness and safety.

However, the final equipment list will only be confirmed when Toyota officially reveals the SUV.

Familiar Platform and Engine Options Expected

Despite the extensive cosmetic and technological changes, the next-generation Fortuner is expected to retain the IMV ladder-frame chassis. Toyota could introduce suspension refinements to improve ride comfort and handling without compromising the vehicle’s off-road capability.

Engine options are likely to include the existing 2.7-litre naturally aspirated petrol and 2.8-litre diesel units. Selected variants could also continue offering a 48V mild-hybrid system, following the approach used in the current lineup.

Current Fortuner Prices and Market Expectations

In India, the existing Fortuner petrol range starts at Rs 35.11 lakh, while diesel variants begin at Rs 35.75 lakh. The range extends to approximately Rs 51 lakh for the diesel-only GR-S trim. The Fortuner Legender is priced between Rs 43.35 lakh and Rs 48.77 lakh, with all prices representing ex-showroom figures.

Toyota has not announced prices for the upcoming generation. Whether the Legender nameplate will continue alongside the redesigned Fortuner also remains uncertain.

With its global debut approaching, the new Fortuner is expected to deliver a significant update while preserving the durable mechanical foundation that has defined the SUV for nearly a decade.
