NZ vs PAK: Latham Ruled Out for Pakistan ODI Series

Karachi, March 27, 2025 – New Zealand’s preparations for the ODI series against Pakistan suffered a setback as Tom Latham has been ruled out due to a fractured hand sustained during practice.

His absence deals a significant blow to the Black Caps, who were relying on his experience and leadership.

With Latham unavailable, Michael Bracewell will assume captaincy duties, while Henry Nicholls has been called up as his replacement. Additionally, Rhys Mariu joins the squad as cover, with Will Young also departing after the first match to attend the birth of his second child.

Latham, who was set to lead New Zealand in the absence of regular captain Mitchell Santner—who is occupied with domestic T20 commitments—sustained the injury when he was struck on his right hand. Subsequent X-rays confirmed the severity of the fracture, ruling him out for the entire series against Pakistan.

As a result, Mitch Hay will take over wicketkeeping duties, while Bracewell, fresh off captaining the team in a T20I series victory over Pakistan, will now have the opportunity to lead in the ODI format as well.

Despite losing Latham and already dealing with multiple player absences, New Zealand head coach Gary Stead remains optimistic about the series against Pakistan.

“We’ve had to be adaptable on this tour, given that several players are unavailable for different reasons,” Stead said. “While it’s unfortunate to lose Latham as captain just before the series, this also creates opportunities for other players.”

Stead expressed excitement over Mariu’s first-time inclusion in the squad and praised Nicholls’ return.

“Rhys (Mariu) is joining the environment for the first time, and we are excited to see what he can bring. Henry (Nicholls) has been in excellent form since returning from injury, and his experience will be valuable for us against Pakistan,” Stead added.

The three-match ODI series between New Zealand and Pakistan is set to commence on Saturday in Napier. Despite the challenges, New Zealand remains determined to put up a strong fight against Pakistan, with Bracewell leading the charge in Latham’s absence.
