Karachi, December 13, 2024 – Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) has made a significant breakthrough with the discovery of gas and condensate in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) province, a promising development for Pakistan’s energy sector.
In a statement to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), OGDCL, which operates the Wali Exploration License with a 100% working interest, confirmed the discovery in the Samanasuk formation. The exploratory success was achieved at the Bettani-02 (Slant) well, situated in District Lakki Marwat, KPK.
The Bettani-02 well was initially drilled as an appraisal well to a depth of 5,080 meters, reaching the Shinawari formation. During the operation, a 247-meter-thick Samanasuk formation was penetrated, where hydrocarbons were identified. Subsequent testing, specifically Cased Hole DST-1, yielded encouraging results, with the well flowing at a rate of 2.14 Million Standard Cubic Feet per Day (MMSCFD) of gas and 74 barrels of condensate per day (BCPD). These figures were recorded on a 32/64” choke with a wellhead flowing pressure of 435 psi.
According to OGDCL, this discovery is particularly noteworthy as it represents the first-ever hydrocarbon find in the Samanasuk formation under the Wali Exploration License. It marks a significant extension of the hydrocarbon play area in the southwestern region of the Bannu Basin, which has long been considered a region of untapped potential.
OGDCL emphasized that this success not only highlights the region’s untapped resources but also reduces the risks associated with exploring deeper reservoirs. The company plans to leverage this breakthrough by implementing a comprehensive exploration program to unlock additional potential in the area.
The discovery comes at a time when Pakistan faces increasing energy demands, making this find critical for boosting domestic production and reducing reliance on imported fuels. OGDCL’s ongoing efforts underscore its commitment to bolstering the country’s energy reserves while promoting economic growth through strategic resource development.
This landmark discovery is expected to have far-reaching implications for the energy landscape in KPK, reinforcing the region’s importance in Pakistan’s hydrocarbon exploration endeavors.
