OGDCL Discovers Hydrocarbons in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Karachi, March 26, 2024 – The Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) revealed on Tuesday a significant hydrocarbons discovery in Kohat District, located in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province of Pakistan, marking a milestone in the country’s energy sector.

OGDCL promptly informed both the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) and the London Stock Exchange Plc. about this momentous discovery, highlighting its potential impact on the company’s operations and the broader energy landscape.

The discovery was made in the exploratory segment of the Togh-02 (Slant) well, situated within the Kohat Exploration License area, governed under the Pakistan Petroleum and Exploration Rules, 2001. OGDCL, as the operator, holds a 75 percent interest in the license, with M/s. Saif Energy Limited (SEL) holding the remaining 25 percent.

The drilling of the Togh-02 well commenced on August 28, 2022, and successfully reached its total depth at 2,600 meters measured depth. Following this achievement, a Cased Hole Drill Stem Test was conducted in the Lumshiwal-II Formation, a key geological formation within the region.

The results of the test were highly promising, indicating a significant flow rate of 2.842 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of gas and 28 barrels per day of condensate (BPDX). Additionally, the well exhibited a well head flowing pressure of 540 pounds per square inch (PSI) at a choke size of 32/64 inches.

This discovery is particularly noteworthy as it extends the hydrocarbons play area within the Togh Structure, opening up potential new opportunities for exploration and development. The presence of gas and condensate in commercial quantities underscores the rich hydrocarbon potential of the region and augurs well for future energy endeavors in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The announcement of this hydrocarbons discovery by OGDCL underscores the company’s commitment to exploring and harnessing Pakistan’s indigenous energy resources. It also reflects the significance of public-private partnerships in driving forward the nation’s energy sector, fostering economic growth, and meeting the country’s energy needs.

As OGDCL continues to evaluate the commercial viability of this discovery and plans for further exploration and development activities, stakeholders anticipate positive outcomes that will contribute to the energy security and prosperity of Pakistan. The discovery holds promise for boosting domestic production, reducing dependence on imports, and strengthening the country’s energy self-sufficiency.
