Discovery at Bobi Deep-1 well expected to boost domestic hydrocarbon reserves and strengthen Pakistan’s energy security
Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) has announced a significant oil and gas discovery in Sindh’s Sanghar district, a development that could strengthen Pakistan’s domestic energy resources and support efforts to reduce reliance on imported fuels.
In a notice submitted to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Wednesday, OGDCL said it had successfully discovered hydrocarbons at its exploratory well, Bobi Deep-1, located within the Bobi and Dhamraki Mining Lease area, where the company holds a 100% working interest.
The company reported encouraging results from testing the Massive Sand reservoir in the Lower Goru Formation through a cased-hole Drill Stem Test (DST).
According to OGDCL, the well produced 2,000 barrels of oil per day (BOPD) and 1.1 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (MMSCFD) at a choke size of 32/64 inch, with a wellhead flowing pressure of 1,050 pounds per square inch (psi).
OGDCL re-entered the Bobi Deep-1 well on May 3, 2026, to assess the hydrocarbon potential of the Lower Goru Formation. The well was drilled to a total depth of 3,305 metres in the Sembar Formation using the company’s in-house technical and operational capabilities.
The discovery represents the first hydrocarbon find from the Massive Sand play within the Bobi and Dhamraki Mining Lease, opening a new exploration horizon in the area.
The company said the discovery not only establishes a new exploration play but also helps reduce geological risks associated with similar prospects in the surrounding region, potentially encouraging further exploration activity.
Pakistan has been seeking to increase domestic oil and gas production to address persistent energy shortages and reduce the financial burden of energy imports. Industry experts view new hydrocarbon discoveries as critical to narrowing the country’s energy supply-demand gap.
OGDCL said the latest discovery would contribute to enhancing national hydrocarbon reserves and underscore the untapped potential of Pakistan’s sedimentary basins.
The company added that continued exploration success remains essential for strengthening energy security and supporting long-term economic growth.
