Pakistan’s prime minister reaffirms support for multilateralism and the UN Charter as Otunnu seeks backing for his candidacy for UN Secretary-General.

ISLAMABAD: H.E. Ambassador Olara Otunnu, candidate for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations, called on Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Friday.

Otunnu was accompanied by H.E. Ruhakana Rugunda, Special Envoy of the President of Uganda and former Prime Minister of Uganda.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Tariq Fatemi and Foreign Secretary Ambassador Amna Baloch were also present during the meeting.

Shehbaz reaffirms Pakistan’s support for UN Charter

During the meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the principles and purposes of the United Nations Charter.

The prime minister stressed the importance of ensuring respect for international law and international treaties, saying Pakistan would continue to provide strong and enduring support for multilateralism and the role of the United Nations in global affairs.

Prime Minister Shehbaz also expressed the hope that the next UN Secretary-General would continue to focus on the organisation’s three key pillars — peace and security, development, and human rights — in an interconnected and balanced manner.

Otunnu appreciates Pakistan’s multilateral role

Ambassador Otunnu expressed his profound gratitude for Pakistan’s longstanding contributions to multilateralism and its support for all three pillars of the United Nations.

He also appreciated Pakistan’s leadership and its role in ongoing international efforts to promote peace and security.

The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss the importance of strengthening international cooperation and maintaining the central role of the United Nations in addressing global challenges.
