OpenAI is rolling out a new ChatGPT feature called Computer History, designed to allow the chatbot to learn from users’ activity across websites and applications.
The feature follows recent upgrades to OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 models, which improved accuracy and reasoning adaptability while reducing unnecessary information, according to the information provided.
OpenAI describes Computer History as an optional feature that records activity on a computer and turns the collected information into memories and a timeline that ChatGPT can reference later.
The feature is designed to give ChatGPT additional context about what users have been doing, potentially allowing the chatbot to provide more personalised responses based on their previous computer activity.
However, OpenAI has warned users about potential privacy risks associated with Computer History.
According to the company’s disclaimer, the feature may capture sensitive information. The collected information is not encrypted by Computer History, meaning other programmes running on the computer could potentially access the data.
ChatGPT Computer History availability
Computer History will be available to desktop Mac users subscribed to ChatGPT Pro, Business and Enterprise plans.
The feature will not be available in every market. OpenAI is excluding several regions, including the United Kingdom, Switzerland and the European Economic Area (EEA).
OpenAI said Computer History will replace the Chronicle research preview, which previously explored similar ways of allowing ChatGPT to use information from users’ computer activity.
The optional nature of Computer History means users can decide whether they are comfortable granting ChatGPT access to this type of activity data.
The feature’s ability to build a timeline and memories from computer activity could give ChatGPT more context for future conversations, but the privacy warning means users may need to carefully consider the type of information that could be captured before enabling it.
