Orlando Bloom has shared candid details about filming an intimate scene with Rooney Mara and Kate Mara for Werner Herzog’s Bucking Fastard.
Orlando Bloom has opened up about filming an intimate scene with sisters Rooney Mara and Kate Mara for the upcoming film Bucking Fastard.
The 49-year-old actor discussed the experience on Friday, September 18, while attending the San Sebastian Film Festival to promote the highly anticipated movie.
Orlando Bloom discusses intimate scene
Asked about filming the scene alongside the two actresses, Bloom described the moment as sincere, highlighting the unusual combination of innocence and desire at the heart of the story.
“There was such simplicity to the characters and [their] carnal desires, but also an innocence to the sisters,” Bloom said.
The actor explained that his character, the Bucking Fastard, is also sensitive and quickly finds himself out of his depth.
“My character, the Bucking Fastard, is sensitive too. And he’s quite quickly out of his depth in some ways. It was a very sincere sort of moment that was created,” Bloom said, according to Variety.
Werner Herzog recalls directing the scene
Director Werner Herzog also discussed his approach to filming the intimate sequence, saying there are moments when a filmmaker needs to step back and allow actors to find their own way through a performance.
“There are moments when a director has to step back. In the love scene, I said to Orlando: ‘You are in bed, and you have two women in your arms. How you deal with it, I cannot give instructions,’” Herzog said.
He added: “It is beautiful because it has such charm and depth.”
What is Bucking Fastard about?
Bucking Fastard centres on sisters Jean and Joan Holbrooke, played by Kate Mara and Rooney Mara, whose extraordinary closeness forms the foundation of the film’s unusual story.
According to the film’s synopsis, the sisters are so closely connected that they speak in unison, love the same man and share the same dreams. They are even described as making the same slip of the tongue at the same time.
The story explores their unusual relationship through the reactions of the world around them, including the courts and the press. It also follows people who try to help the sisters and others who seek to exploit their circumstances.
The film further examines their connection through the eyes of both tame and wild creatures, while even their own echoes become part of the story.
