PAK vs ZIM: Ayub Century Helps Pakistan Level ODI Series

Bulawayo, November 26, 2024 – Saim Ayub delivered a stellar performance, smashing an unbeaten 113 to lead Pakistan to a dominant 10-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in the second ODI at Queens Sports Club. This emphatic win squared the three-match series at 1-1, setting up an exciting decider.

Zimbabwe, aiming for a historic series victory over Pakistan after their 80-run triumph in the rain-affected first ODI, struggled to replicate their success. Batting first, the hosts were bowled out for just 145 runs in 34.2 overs, with Pakistan’s bowlers taking full advantage of the conditions.

Pakistan’s opening duo of Saim Ayub and Abdullah Shafique showcased a clinical batting display, reaching the target in only 18.2 overs. Ayub was the star, hitting 113 runs off just 62 balls, laced with 17 boundaries and three sixes. His blistering century, achieved in only 53 balls, is the second-fastest ODI hundred by a Pakistani, trailing only Shahid Afridi’s iconic record. Shafique, providing steady support, remained unbeaten on 32 with four boundaries.

Zimbabwe’s bowling attack failed to make an impact, with Brandon Mavuta being the most expensive, conceding 47 runs in just four overs. Despite rotating five bowlers, the home side struggled to contain the free-flowing Pakistani openers.

Earlier in the day, Zimbabwe’s batting faltered from the start, losing openers Joylord Gumbie (5) and Tadiwanashe Marumani (4) within the first four overs. Dion Myers (33) and Sean Williams (31) provided brief resistance, but their efforts fell short. Pakistan’s Salman Ali Agha and Abrar Ahmed were the chief destroyers, claiming three and four wickets respectively.

Zimbabwe’s reliance on Pakistan-born all-rounder Sikandar Raza didn’t pay off, as he managed only 17 runs before falling to Ali Agha.

With the series now level, the final ODI on Thursday promises to be a thrilling contest. Afterward, the teams will play three T20Is in Bulawayo, followed by Pakistan’s all-format tour of South Africa.
