Pakistan Aim to Rekindle Cricket World Cup Hopes Against Afghanistan

Pakistan started the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 with a bang, triumphing over the Netherlands and Sri Lanka. However, their momentum took a hit with consecutive losses to India and Australia.

To rekindle their semi-final aspirations, Pakistan faces Afghanistan, a familiar adversary, on Monday, October 23, at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

The consecutive setbacks have left Pakistan with minimal room for error, as they aim to secure the six victories required to advance to the Cricket World Cup knockout stage.

Afghanistan arrives at the perfect time for Pakistan, who are in desperate need of regaining their form. Afghanistan boasts a flawless 7-0 record in their previous ODI encounters, providing a significant confidence boost.

In most of their previous matches, Pakistan has dominated Afghanistan, with one exception – a closely contested 50-over encounter just two months ago.

In that match, Afghanistan posted an impressive 300 runs in Hambantota, thanks to openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran’s formidable partnership of 157 for the first wicket.

Imam-ul-Haq’s composed 91 helped Pakistan secure victory, but it came down to the wire, with just one wicket and one ball remaining.

Gurbaz, who scored 151 in that thrilling contest, has continued to shine, notably with a rapid 80 against England, leading Afghanistan to a stunning victory at the Cricket World Cup.

Pakistan should remain vigilant, as the same dynamic openers could propel Afghanistan to another surprise win. Additionally, the spin duo of Rashid Khan and Mujeeb ur Rahman poses a significant threat in this high-stakes encounter.
