Islamabad, September 6, 2024 – Pakistan has officially declared Tuesday, September 17, as a public holiday to celebrate Eid Milad un Nabi, the birth anniversary of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The announcement was made through an official notification on Friday, stating that the country will commemorate the 12th of Rabi ul Awal in the Islamic year 1446 Hijri.
This day holds great significance for Muslims worldwide, as Eid Milad un Nabi is observed to honor the birth of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). In Pakistan, the day is marked by various events, including public processions, gatherings, and seminars that focus on the life and teachings (Seerah) of the Prophet. Streets, mosques, and homes are often adorned with lights and banners, with prayers and recitations of the Holy Quran taking center stage in many events.
The official notification by Pakistan came after the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee announced that the crescent for Rabi ul Awal was not sighted on Wednesday, September 4, 2024. Therefore, the Islamic month of Rabi ul Awal officially commenced on Friday, September 6, 2024. The moon sighting committee, led by its chairman Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad, convened in Islamabad to observe the crescent and subsequently made the declaration.
“We didn’t receive any credible reports of moon sightings from across the country, so the committee unanimously concluded that Rabi ul Awal would begin on September 6 (Friday),” said Maulana Azad in a press briefing. He added that although some regions of Pakistan had clear skies, most areas experienced cloudy weather, making it difficult to observe the crescent. Despite the weather conditions, no confirmed sightings of the new moon were reported.
Eid Milad un Nabi, celebrated on the 12th of Rabi ul Awal, in Pakistan is a day of reflection for Muslims as they commemorate the birth and legacy of the Holy Prophet (PBUH). The day is observed with great reverence, with activities that highlight his teachings of peace, kindness, and compassion.
The announcement of the public holiday allows citizens to fully participate in the festivities, as people across the nation come together to honor the life and message of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). This year, as with every year, millions of Pakistanis are expected to join in the celebrations, attending events that celebrate the Seerah and spread the Prophet’s message of unity and love.
