Pakistan keeps petrol price unchanged until May 31, 2025

In a recent announcement, the government of Pakistan has decided to maintain the current petrol price at Rs252.63 per litre for the second half of May 2025.

This decision means that there will be no change in the petrol price across the country until May 31, despite a recent downward trend in global oil prices.

The federal government made this announcement on Thursday, opting not to pass on the potential relief from declining international rates to the general public. Instead, the benefit is being retained by oil refineries, petroleum marketing companies, and fuel dealers. This strategic move reflects Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to balance fiscal pressures while stabilizing the domestic energy market.

However, there is some relief for consumers using High-Speed Diesel (HSD). The price of HSD has been reduced by Rs2, lowering it from Rs256.64 to Rs254.64 per litre. The revised prices have come into effect starting May 16, 2025.

The decision to hold petrol prices steady was taken following recommendations by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) and consultations with relevant ministries. According to officials, while international petroleum prices have shown signs of easing, the government is prioritizing internal economic adjustments and revenue targets over immediate consumer relief.

Petrol remains a critical commodity for Pakistan’s transport and logistics sectors, and its price has a direct impact on inflation and the overall cost of living. By keeping petrol prices unchanged, Pakistan aims to provide stability in fuel pricing, though the decision may draw criticism from sections of the public expecting price cuts in light of global market trends.

This marks the second consecutive fortnight where Pakistan has resisted reducing petrol rates, signaling a cautious approach to fiscal management amid broader economic challenges. Consumers in Pakistan will now have to wait until the next review, due at the end of May, for any possible change in petrol prices.
