Pakistan Opens 71 New Blocks for Oil and Gas Exploration

Islamabad – Pakistan has announced the offering of 71 new blocks for oil and gas exploration, marking a significant step in revitalizing the country’s energy sector after a decade.

Federal Minister for Petroleum, Dr. Musadik Malik, stated on Tuesday that 40 offshore and 31 onshore blocks have been made available to attract both domestic and international investors.

Speaking at the 30th Annual Technical Conference and Oil Show, the minister emphasized that a large portion of Pakistan’s natural resources remains unexplored. He urged global investors to take advantage of these opportunities, ensuring them that Pakistan is fully committed to providing all necessary support. “Pakistan is open for business, and we will facilitate investors at every step,” he assured.

The government’s energy strategy is built on three core principles: Access to Energy, Provision of Affordable Energy, and Sustainability of Energy. Dr. Malik elaborated that to achieve these objectives, the government is focusing on indigenization, electrification, and liberalization in the energy sector.

A key part of the strategy is the introduction of deregulation and price capping policies, aimed at making the oil and gas sector more competitive. He stressed that merely bringing in technology will not be enough—continuous innovation and self-reliance are essential for long-term progress. “For sustainable growth, Pakistan must invest in science and research,” he stated.

Discussing the future of the oil sector, Dr. Malik highlighted the transition to modern technology as a priority. He noted that the Prime Minister’s vision is to improve the quality of life for Pakistan’s citizens by ensuring affordable and efficient energy. “Prosperity will not come by introducing just one machine; we need a broader transformation,” he remarked.

The minister also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to reducing energy costs for the underprivileged, stating that efforts are ongoing to expand local energy production while minimizing environmental impact. Pakistan is actively working on utilizing its domestic resources, including its vast shale and tight gas reserves.

Encouraging Pakistan’s youth, Dr. Malik urged them to believe in their potential, emphasizing that national progress depends on self-reliance and innovation. “We must focus on development rather than conflicts,” he concluded, reiterating the government’s dedication to ensuring energy access for all.
