Pakistan opens portal for student registration under PM Laptop Scheme

The Prime Minister of Pakistan has announced the launch of the Prime Minister’s Laptop Scheme (Phase-III), which aims to provide high-quality laptops to talented students in public sector universities and higher education institutions across the country.

The scheme, designed to promote merit-based distribution through an online and transparent system, will facilitate up to 100,000 students. Interested students can apply through the dedicated online portal, www.pmyp.gov.pk until June 20, 2023, as informed by the Higher Education Commission (HEC).

The primary objective of the Prime Minister’s Laptop Scheme is to enhance the quality of science and technology education, particularly in the field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). By providing advanced IT technologies to students, the scheme aims to increase productivity and efficiency. The scheme has previously been successfully executed under the supervision of the HEC, Pakistan, through two similar initiatives.

Eligibility Criteria: To be eligible for the laptop award, students must be enrolled in Public Sector Universities or Degree Awarding Institutes recognized by the HEC. The following enrollment dates apply based on different program durations:

• Five-year program: Admitted after June 30, 2018, and before June 30, 2023.

• Four-year program: Admitted after June 30, 2019, and before June 30, 2023.

• Two-year program: Admitted after June 30, 2021, and before June 30, 2023.

• 3.5, 2.5, and 1.5-year programs: Starting admission dates range from December 31, 2019, to December 31, 2021, with the end date set as June 30, 2023.

Students pursuing PhD/MS/MPhil or equivalent 18-year programs must not be enrolled in a weekend program to qualify for consideration. Eligibility and enrollment status will be verified on the day of laptop distribution at the respective higher education institutions (HEIs). Only those students who have timely applied through the online portal and meet the specified criteria will be awarded a laptop.

Selection Process: Laptops will be distributed based on merit, considering students from all degree programs, including BS (16 Years), MS/MPhil (18 Years), and PhD. The allocation of laptops will be calculated according to the enrollment in each degree program. Students must have achieved a minimum of 70 percent marks in the semester system or 60 percent marks in the annual system. Conversion of CGPA/GPA to a percentage will be determined using the formula defined by the HEC. The top-performing students, based on the allocated quota of each department/program, will be considered for laptop awards as per their respective quota (year-wise or semester-wise).

The Prime Minister’s Laptop Scheme (Phase-III) is a prestigious initiative aimed at providing talented students in public sector universities with high-quality laptops. By promoting merit-based distribution and leveraging an online and transparent system, the scheme seeks to enhance science and technology education, particularly in the field of ICT. Interested students are encouraged to apply through the dedicated online portal before the deadline of June 20, 2023, for a chance to be awarded a laptop that can support their academic endeavors and contribute to their future success.
