Government highlights competitive manufacturing, technology adoption and electric mobility as key priorities for the future of Pakistan’s automotive sector.
Pakistan is looking to reshape its automotive industry by encouraging stronger local manufacturing, technological innovation and a quicker shift towards electric vehicles. The government says these areas will be central to creating a more competitive and sustainable auto sector.
Coordinator to the Prime Minister for Commerce and Industries, Rana Ihsan Afzal Khan, shared the government’s priorities while addressing the PAAPAM Symposium during the second day of the Pakistan International Auto Show 2026 at the Lahore International Expo Centre.
Industry Stakeholders Discuss Future Growth
The symposium was organized by the Pakistan Association of Automotive Parts and Accessories Manufacturers (PAAPAM) under the theme “Competitiveness—Localization and Electric Mobility.”
Before speaking at the event, Rana Ihsan Afzal Khan visited exhibition stalls featuring local and international automotive companies. He also met industry representatives and reviewed displays from automotive parts manufacturers and emerging electric vehicle companies.
He acknowledged the industry’s contribution to manufacturing, innovation and economic activity in Pakistan.
Localization Linked With Global Standards
The Prime Minister’s Coordinator emphasized that localization should not be limited to producing more components domestically. According to him, local manufacturing must also meet international standards for quality, affordability, reliability and competitiveness.
A stronger domestic supply chain could provide consumers with greater vehicle choices while helping manufacturers improve efficiency and technological capabilities.
Automotive Sector Supports Economy
Rana Ihsan Afzal Khan highlighted the wider economic impact of vehicle manufacturing, noting that each locally produced vehicle supports a broad network of manufacturers, vendors, engineers, technicians and other workers.
The automotive industry contributes nearly four percent to Pakistan’s GDP and supports employment for millions of people across its associated value chain.
Faster Shift Toward Electric Vehicles
The government also emphasized the need for the automotive industry to prepare for emerging technologies, particularly electric mobility. The sector has been encouraged to increase investment in new technologies while maintaining competitiveness.
The government reiterated its intention to work with industry stakeholders on consistent, inclusive and future-focused policies aimed at supporting investment and long-term growth.
