Broadband Growth, 5G Auction, and Digital Reforms Drive Sector Expansion
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s telecommunication sector continued its robust expansion during FY 2026, with total telecom subscriptions rising to 207.2 million by March 2026. This significant increase reflects growing digital adoption and improved connectivity across the country.
Broadband services also witnessed notable progress, with the number of subscribers reaching 161 million. As a result, broadband penetration climbed to 64.2 percent, highlighting the rapid shift toward internet-based services and digital platforms in both urban and rural areas.
The sector maintained strong financial performance, generating telecom revenues of Rs 837 billion during the July–March FY 2026 period.
In addition, the telecom industry contributed Rs 285 billion to the national exchequer, reinforcing its importance as a key source of government revenue and economic stability.
Investment in the sector remained healthy, with approximately US $567 million recorded during the period. These investments supported infrastructure development, network expansion, and service quality improvements across multiple telecom operators.
A major milestone during FY 2026 was the successful completion of the 5G spectrum auction by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) on 10 March 2026.
The auction generated around US $509.6 million through the sale of 480 MHz spectrum across various frequency bands, marking a significant step toward next-generation connectivity.
Pakistan also strengthened its global regulatory standing, as the PTA retained its “G5 Regulator Advanced Level” status from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). This recognition reflects ongoing improvements in regulatory governance and digital transformation initiatives.
Furthermore, advancements in Wi-Fi 7 adoption, progress under the National Fiberization Plan, satellite communication licensing, and enhanced cybersecurity frameworks further strengthened the country’s digital ecosystem.
These developments collectively support Pakistan’s long-term goal of building a more connected and digitally empowered economy.
