Patrick J. Adams, best known for his role as Michael Ross on the hit legal drama Suits, recently opened up about the personal reasons behind his departure from the show after seven successful seasons. Speaking on Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s Dinner’s on Me podcast, the actor revealed that his marriage to Troian Bellisario played a pivotal role in his decision to step away.
Adams, 43, shared that his relationship with Bellisario, famed for her portrayal of Spencer Hastings on Pretty Little Liars, was significantly impacted by the demands of his acting career. “I never regretted the decision for a second. I knew it was the right thing for my marriage,” Adams said. At the time, the couple was engaged and planning their wedding, which took place in 2016.
Reflecting on the challenges of their long-distance relationship during his tenure on Suits, Adams explained, “We had been away from each other for seven years. We’d been together the whole time Suits had been on, but it was time for us to start our lives together.”
The actor emphasized that leaving the show wasn’t just about prioritizing his relationship but also about their shared dreams of building a family. “We wanted to be together. We wanted to have kids, which we knew would take a couple of years before we were comfortable doing that,” he added.
Adams clarified that his departure had no connection to any conflicts with the Suits cast or production team. Instead, it stemmed from a sense that his character’s arc had naturally come to a close. “Over the course of seven seasons, that was all peeled away, and everybody knew everything,” he said, reflecting on how Michael Ross’s story had fully unfolded.
Adams’ decision to leave Suits stands as a testament to his commitment to his personal life and his belief in prioritizing relationships over career demands. His departure marked a turning point in his life, allowing him to focus on building a family while leaving a legacy on the beloved series.
