Islamabad, November 26, 2024 – The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), in collaboration with Sri Lanka Cricket, has decided to postpone the final two 50-over matches of the Pakistan Shaheens-Sri Lanka ‘A’ series. The decision comes in light of the ongoing Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) protests in the federal capital, which have disrupted routine life in Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
PTI launched its protest on November 24, 2024, leading to heightened security measures and road closures across the twin cities. These government measures, aimed at maintaining public order, have caused significant logistical challenges, including restrictions on movement near the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, where the matches were scheduled to take place on Wednesday and Friday.
The PCB, after consultations with Sri Lanka Cricket, emphasized that the safety and well-being of players, officials, and fans remain a top priority. A PCB spokesperson said, “We regret the inconvenience caused to cricket fans but believe this decision is necessary given the current circumstances. Both boards are committed to rescheduling these matches at a later date.”
The series had already seen the Shaheens in dominant form. They secured a 1-0 victory in the two four-day matches and started the 50-over leg on a high note, winning the first match by a convincing 108-run margin on Monday.
Fans and analysts have praised the Shaheens for their strong performances, showcasing promising talent ahead of upcoming international commitments. However, the postponement of these matches has left cricket enthusiasts disappointed.
Efforts are underway to finalize new dates for the matches once the situation stabilizes. The PCB said both cricket boards have reiterated their commitment to completing the series, ensuring minimal disruption to the ongoing bilateral cricketing ties between Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
The series is seen as a crucial platform for emerging players, and both teams are eager to resume the remaining fixtures under safer and more conducive conditions.
