Legendary Transformers voice actor dies at his Los Angeles home after a six-decade career in film, television and animation
Peter Cullen, the legendary voice actor who gave Optimus Prime his unmistakable baritone in Transformers, has died at the age of 85.
Cullen died on August 26 at his home in Los Angeles, according to his agent Kevin Motley and his family. A cause of death has not been disclosed.
His family said Cullen died peacefully surrounded by loved ones and urged fans to honour his memory by embracing the qualities associated with his most famous character, including compassion, integrity and loyalty.
The family also encouraged people to serve their communities while remembering the message, “be strong enough to be gentle”.
Cullen first voiced Optimus Prime when the original Transformers animated series debuted in 1984. His performance helped establish the Autobot leader as a calm, authoritative and compassionate figure whose voice became recognisable across generations.
The inspiration behind Optimus Prime’s voice was deeply personal. Before auditioning for the role, Cullen’s older brother Larry, a US Marine Corps veteran who served in Vietnam, encouraged him to portray the character as a genuine hero rather than an exaggerated Hollywood figure.
Cullen later said he drew inspiration from his brother while developing Optimus Prime’s voice and personality.
Peter Cullen’s Transformers legacy
Cullen continued playing Optimus Prime as Transformers expanded from television into Hollywood films. He returned for the 2007 live-action movie and subsequently voiced the character in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Transformers: Age of Extinction, Transformers: The Last Knight, Bumblebee and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts in 2023.
However, Optimus Prime was not Cullen’s only iconic role.
He was also widely recognised as the voice of Eeyore in the Winnie the Pooh franchise, beginning with The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.
His other credits included Monterey Jack in Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers, KARR in Knight Rider and roles in The Smurfs and G.I. Joe. He also created the distinctive clicking vocal effects for the creature in Predator.
Cullen received a lifetime achievement award at the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards in 2023. He had also earned a Daytime Emmy nomination in 2011 for his work as Optimus Prime.
Hasbro paid tribute to Cullen, describing his career as spanning six decades and praising his contribution to the character’s themes of courage, sacrifice and leadership.
