Phil Simmons Retains Bangladesh Head Coach Role Until 2027

Dhaka, March 25, 2025 – The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has confirmed that Phil Simmons will continue as the head coach of the national team until the end of 2027.

The decision reflects the board’s confidence in Simmons’ leadership and vision for the team’s future.

Originally appointed in October 2024, Simmons was initially contracted until the conclusion of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. However, after a series of commendable performances, including matches against South Africa, Afghanistan, and the West Indies, the BCB decided to extend his tenure through the next ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in 2027.

With this extension, Simmons faces the challenge of overseeing a transitional phase in Bangladesh cricket, particularly as several senior players from the white-ball squad have retired. His task will be to develop a new core of players capable of competing at the highest level.

A Decorated Coaching Career

Simmons brings a wealth of experience to the Bangladesh setup. His coaching journey began with Zimbabwe in 2004 before he moved on to a highly successful stint with Ireland from 2007 to 2015. Under his guidance, Ireland achieved significant milestones, including victories over top-ranked teams in ICC events.

In 2016, Simmons led the West Indies to an ICC World T20 title, further cementing his reputation as a coach who excels in nurturing talent. He later worked with Afghanistan between 2018 and 2019 before taking on the Bangladesh role.

Simmons’ Vision for Bangladesh Cricket

Speaking on his contract extension, Simmons expressed his enthusiasm for the long-term project with Bangladesh. “I am honored to continue working with this talented group of players. The potential within this squad is immense, and I truly believe we can accomplish great things together,” he said.

Reflecting on his tenure so far, Simmons added, “The last few months have been incredibly fulfilling. The dedication and skill I’ve seen in this team are outstanding, and I’m excited to help them reach new heights.”

Upcoming Challenges

Following the Champions Trophy 2025, Bangladesh will embark on a two-match Test series against Zimbabwe at home, beginning on April 20. Simmons will play a crucial role in preparing the team for this assignment, setting the foundation for their long-term success.
