PlayStation 6 Price Leak Suggests $699 Launch Cost

A new rumor surrounding Sony’s next-generation gaming console suggests that the unannounced PlayStation 6 may launch at a lower price than many gamers expect. Although Sony has not officially revealed the console yet, the company has previously indicated that developing a successor to the PlayStation 5 remains a priority.

The speculation comes at a time when Sony has confirmed price increases for several existing PlayStation products. Starting April 2, the company plans to raise the prices of the base PlayStation 5, the PS5 Digital Edition, the PS5 Pro, and the PlayStation Portal. Sony attributes these price adjustments to ongoing global economic challenges affecting manufacturing and supply chains.

Despite the price hikes, a well-known gaming insider known as KeplerL2 claims that Sony could still launch the PlayStation 6 with a relatively competitive price tag. According to the leaker, the console could retail for around $699.

Posting on the NeoGAF forum, KeplerL2 estimated that the production cost of the PlayStation 6 could be roughly $760. The insider suggested that Sony might subsidize part of the cost in order to keep the retail price attractive to consumers.

The leak also indicates that the rumored PlayStation 6 configuration used in the estimate includes a 1TB Gen5 solid-state drive and does not feature a disc drive. This suggests Sony may follow a digital-first approach similar to the PS5 Digital Edition.

However, the insider also questioned whether Sony would still be willing to sell its next console at a loss. In the past, Sony has often priced new hardware aggressively to compete with Microsoft’s Xbox consoles. With Xbox currently posing less direct competition in the console market, the strategy could change.

The rumor quickly sparked intense debate among gamers online, particularly on the GamingLeaksAndRumours subreddit. Many fans pointed out that predicting hardware prices for a console expected to launch around the 2027 holiday season may be premature.

Some users speculated that the PlayStation 6 could cost anywhere between $900 and $1,000 by the time it arrives. Others suggested the gaming industry may increasingly adopt smartphone-style monthly payment plans to make expensive consoles more accessible.

For now, the PlayStation 6 remains unconfirmed, and Sony has not provided any official information regarding its price or release timeline.
