Sony’s PlayStation has removed Grand Theft Auto 6 branding from its social media accounts just days after adopting the game’s artwork, prompting speculation among fans as anticipation builds for Rockstar Games’ highly awaited release.
The company recently updated its social media banner and PlayStation App icon with Grand Theft Auto 6-themed artwork featuring the game’s signature sunset colour palette. However, the branding has now been replaced.
PlayStation has restored its app icon to its traditional blue design and updated its social media banner with promotional artwork for NBA 2K26: Season 8, according to observations shared by fan account GTA 6 Countdown on X, formerly Twitter.
Sony has not commented on the reason for the change.
The move comes as discussion around Grand Theft Auto 6 remains intense following the opening of pre-orders and continued debate over reports that the game will not receive a traditional physical disc release.
Some fans have linked the branding change to recent criticism surrounding PlayStation’s reported plans to phase out physical game discs for future releases, although Sony has not officially confirmed those reports.
Others believe the removal simply reflects routine marketing activity. Social media users noted that temporary app icons and banners are commonly used to promote major game launches before reverting to standard branding or shifting focus to other titles.
Some fans also expect PlayStation to introduce additional themed branding later this year to promote upcoming first-party releases, including Marvel’s Wolverine from Insomniac Games.
There is no evidence that Rockstar Games requested the removal of the Grand Theft Auto 6 branding, despite speculation circulating on social media.
Until Sony or Rockstar provides an official explanation, the change appears to be part of the company’s regular promotional strategy rather than an indication of any broader partnership changes.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on Nov. 19, 2026, making it one of the most anticipated video game releases of the year.
