PM Shehbaz vows nationwide expansion of digital wallets

Islamabad, April 28, 2025 – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on Monday that the federal government is planning to expand the use of digital wallets across Pakistan, with an integrated system that will bring provinces into a unified digital payments framework.

Speaking at a ceremony honoring outstanding contributors to the Prime Minister’s Ramazan Relief Package, Shehbaz emphasized the critical role that digital wallets played in ensuring smooth, transparent, and dignified disbursement of financial aid.

During his address, Shehbaz highlighted that under the Ramazan Relief Package, 79% of the allocated funds were distributed using digital wallets. He praised the system for its efficiency and transparency, contrasting it with older payment methods that were riddled with inefficiencies and lacked safeguards for recipients’ dignity. According to the PM Office Media Wing, Shehbaz noted that transitioning to a modern digital payment structure had rectified many of the flaws in the previous system.

Looking ahead, Shehbaz stated that the government is committed to expanding the reach of digital wallets even further. He shared that next year, the aim is to ensure 100% of all fund transfers are conducted through digital means. By integrating all provinces into the digital framework, the government seeks to build a nationwide, streamlined system that can better serve the public and minimize corruption and delays.

Secretary Benazir Income Support Programme, Amir Ahmed Ali, also spoke at the event, providing a detailed presentation on the Ramazan Relief Package and the innovative use of digital wallets in its implementation. His briefing underscored the operational improvements achieved through adopting digital technologies.

In recognition of their efforts, Shehbaz personally awarded honorary shields to officers from various public and private organizations who contributed to the successful execution of the relief programme. He lauded their dedication to embracing new methods and stressed that their work had laid the foundation for a broader digital revolution in Pakistan’s social welfare programmes.

The expanded use of digital wallets, Shehbaz concluded, reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to transparency, efficiency, and the empowerment of citizens through modern technology.
