PMD forecasts Saturday thunderstorms: check your city

Islamabad, May 9, 2025 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a fresh advisory warning of possible rain, wind, and thunderstorms in multiple parts of the country beginning Saturday, as a new weather system moves in from the west.

According to the PMD, while most areas of Pakistan will continue to experience hot and dry conditions, isolated rain-wind-thunderstorms are expected in various regions including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, upper Punjab, northeastern and southern Balochistan, southeastern Sindh, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan.

The PMD alert also highlights the potential for thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rainfall, hailstorms, dust storms, and lightning in some areas, which may cause damage to infrastructure such as electric poles, trees, vehicles, solar panels, and fragile structures. These weather conditions are expected to last from Saturday evening through May 12.

In Islamabad, the forecast predicts mainly dry conditions with partly cloudy skies, but there remains a 30 percent chance of a rain-wind-thunderstorm in the afternoon. The PMD advises residents to remain cautious during any sudden weather changes.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will see partly cloudy weather in most districts, with chances of isolated thunderstorms in Chitral, Swat, Dir, Shangla, Kohistan, Malakand, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Peshawar, Khyber, Waziristan, Kurram, Kohat, and surrounding areas. Some regions may also witness heavy rainfall or hail.

Punjab will largely remain hot and dry, though isolated rain-wind-thunderstorms may develop over Murree, Galliyat, Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Sargodha, Mianwali, Lahore, Sheikhupura, and Dera Ghazi Khan.

Sindh will continue to face intense heat, but areas such as Tharparkar, Mithi, Islamkot, Umerkot, Mirpur Khas, Khairpur, Dadu, Jamshoro, and Hyderabad could see brief rain-wind-thunderstorms under partly cloudy skies.

In Balochistan, the PMD predicts dry weather for most parts but isolated thunderstorms are expected in Zhob, Kalat, Barkhan, Khuzdar, Lasbella, and Panjgur, with possible heavy downpours or hailstorms in some locations.

Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan are also expected to experience partly cloudy skies with chances of afternoon or evening thunderstorms.

Over the past 24 hours, isolated rain-wind-thunderstorms occurred in parts of KP, Punjab, Islamabad, southeastern Sindh, and Balochistan, while most other areas remained dry.

The PMD urges citizens to stay alert, especially in regions vulnerable to adverse weather, and to follow official weather updates. Precautionary measures are advised to ensure safety during potential thunderstorms or hail activity.
