PMD Forecasts Thunderstorm in Balochistan on Monday

Islamabad, January 7, 2024 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a weather forecast predicting a thunderstorm in Balochistan on Monday, January 8, 2024.

According to the PMD report, primarily cold and cloudy weather is anticipated in most upper and western parts of the country, with very cold conditions expected in the northern regions.

The forecast indicates that rain-thunderstorm, accompanied by snow over mountains, is likely in northern Balochistan and lower Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Additionally, light rain or drizzle may occur in upper Punjab, the Pothohar region, and Kashmir. Dense fog and smog are expected to persist in the plain areas of Punjab and upper Sindh.

For the current weather forecast on Sunday, January 7, 2024, the PMD predicts mainly cold and dry conditions in most parts of the country, with very cold temperatures in the northern regions. However, Balochistan is expected to experience cloudy weather with rain-thunderstorm and snow over mountains at scattered places. Dense fog and smog are also likely to persist in Punjab, upper Sindh, and the plain areas of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

The PMD has issued an alert, warning citizens about the continuation of dense fog over the plain areas of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Upper Sindh throughout the week. The public is advised to exercise caution and take necessary precautions.

Explaining the synoptic situation, the PMD highlighted the presence of a shallow westerly wave over the western parts of the country. This weather pattern is expected to influence the prevailing conditions.

In the past 24 hours, the weather has been cold and dry over most parts of the country, with very cold conditions in the northern areas. Dense fog and smog have prevailed over the plain areas of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, upper Sindh, and Islamabad. Notably, Parachinar recorded 10mm of rain, while Gwadar received 03mm.

The recorded lowest minimum temperatures during the same period are as follows (°C): Leh -12, Skardu -10, Kalam, Gilgit, Gupis -05, Astore 04, Rawalakot, Chitral, and Srinagar -03.
