PMD Predicts Thunderstorms in KP on September 30

Islamabad, September 29, 2024 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast a chance of thunderstorms in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) on Monday, September 30, 2024. According to the weather advisory issued by the PMD, most of the country will experience hot and dry conditions, but upper areas of KP could see isolated thunderstorms accompanied by rain and winds.

In its forecast, the PMD highlighted the presence of a westerly wave currently affecting the western parts of the country. This weather system is expected to bring some relief to the otherwise dry conditions by producing rain and thunderstorms in select regions.

“Mainly hot and dry weather is expected across most plain areas of the country on Monday, but isolated places in upper KP could experience rain, wind, and thunderstorms,” the PMD reported. This forecast also extends to potential rain in parts of Gilgit-Baltistan and southeastern Sindh during the evening and night hours.

The weather on Sunday, September 29, is expected to follow a similar pattern, with hot and dry conditions prevailing in most parts of Pakistan. However, as with Monday, upper KP, Gilgit-Baltistan, and southeastern Sindh may see some evening or nighttime rain and thunderstorms.

The synoptic situation reveals that the westerly wave currently hovering over the country could affect the northern regions, creating a likelihood of brief, scattered rain spells, particularly in hilly and mountainous regions of KP.

Over the last 24 hours, much of the country experienced hot and humid weather. Nevertheless, some areas saw rain and thunderstorms, including parts of Punjab and upper KP. The PMD recorded the following rainfall figures: Gujranwala and Okara in Punjab received 21 mm, while Pattan in KP experienced 12 mm of rainfall. Other regions, such as Sialkot, Narowal, and Sahiwal, also saw minor rainfall, ranging from 4 to 6 mm.

The highest temperature recorded yesterday was in Bahawalpur, Padidan, and Dadu, where the mercury hit 41°C. With temperatures continuing to soar in the plains, relief through rainfall remains limited to a few northern and central regions.

The PMD advises residents in areas with predicted thunderstorms to remain cautious and stay updated on any further weather advisories.
